The orphan drugs market is set to grow to $127 billion by 2018, so which countries will be fostering these innovations? The USA were the first to hop on the orphan drug bandwagon with the Orphan Drug Act in 1983. With substantial financial incentives and technical assistance available for developers the USA’s Orphan Drug Act has shaped rare disease legislation around the world. But the vast majority of countries have yet to put in place any legislation to encourage rare disease research or the availability of drugs from foreign developers.
