The FDA recently developed a platform called precisionFDA as their portion of the federal Precision Medicine Initiative. They will be showcasing their efforts towards the new scientific paradigm in the keynote address, as well as highlighting some of the exciting work behind the precisionFDA platform.

This comes on the heels of the brand new efforts announced by the White House several weeks ago towards advancing precision medicine across several agencies, including the NIH, FDA and ONC.

“The interface between the FDA and the private sector will be vitally important if precision medicine as envisioned by President Obama is to become a reality in our lifetime,” says Chris Hackett, Executive Director of the WPMC and Project Director of Life Sciences at Terrapinn. “I am honored to have Commissioner Califf participating and working with us at our inaugural show, and interfacing with a rapidly changing industry. I look forward to working with the FDA in the coming weeks..”

The Commissioner will be joining a roster of expert speakers on topics ranging from cell and gene therapy manufacturing to the internet-of-things (IoT) and cloud computing in healthcare. A few highlight speakers include:

  • Gary Palmer, the Chief Medical Officer of NantHealth, a precision medicine focused healthcare company founded by billionaire investor Dr. Soon-Shiong, who was instrumental in helping to forge the Moonshot Program against cancer led by Vice President Joe Biden.
  • Dr. Murray Brilliant from the Marshfield Clinic, who runs one of the oldest personalized medicine clinics in the country and has himself been invited to the Whitehouse.
  • Mike West, CEO of BioTime, a company with years of experience developing Cell Therapies – a type of therapeutic that many see as the future for precision medicines.

The event is being held November 14-15th 2016 at the Hyatt Washington Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

PrecisionFDA will use an online portal to encourage collaboration between scientists. The goal is towards advancing quality standards, and achieving more consistent and accurate results from next-generation sequencing. Recently, they launched their first challenge, known as the “Consistency Challenge”, which ran from February 25 – April 25, and they are currently analyzing the results.

They currently have a second challenge underway, ending May 26th, in partnership with Genome in a Bottle (GIAB). More information on the challenges can be found on their website here: https://precision.fda.gov/challenges/truth

The World Precision Medicine Congress is the first precision-medicine focused industry event in the United States dedicated to pushing President Obama’s vision forward. It will have streams on Cell Therapy, Gene Therapy, Genomics and Personalized Healthcare.

In partnership with industry and precisionFDA, the conference will be a massive gathering of all major stakeholders in the healthcare, government, pharmaceutical and big data industries towards advancing the new paradigm.

This is the first major precision medicine event to bring pharmaceutical companies to the forefront and bridge the gap between genomics and research.
